Johanna Vargas
The Colombian soprano Johanna Vargas is currently one of the most sought-after singers for contemporary music. She has been a permanent member of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart since 2019 and can be heard regularly at renowned festivals, including ManiFeste (Paris), Biennale di Venezia, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Donaueschinger Musiktage, ECLAT (Stuttgart) and Ultraschall (Berlin).
Johanna Vargas’ flexible and experimental vocal technique is based on her experience in pop, folk, classical music and improvisation. Johanna Vargas combines this rich background with a deep understanding of drama and choreography in her performances. The singer has now premiered numerous works by leading contemporary composers, including Chaya Czernowin, Bernhard Lang and Hans-Joachim Hespos. In addition, Johanna Vargas can be heard in unusual collaborations, for example with the electronic improviser Hainbach, with her duo LAB51 or with young composers.
Johanna Vargas has worked with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Dennis Russel Davies, Peter Rundel and Enrico Pomárico. She has performed with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the SWR and WDR Symphony Orchestras, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien and Ensemble Recherche. She debuted in Arturo Fuentes’ monodrama »Carlotas Zimmer« (2021) at the Opera di Bolzano as part of the Fondazione Haydn Festival and at the SPARK Festival in Cologne with Carola Bauckholt’s noise opera »Hellhörig«.
She is also Artist in Residence of the Fondation Royaumont (2021–2024). In 2022 she received a residency grant at the Cité Internationale des arts, Paris with her ensemble Duo LAB51. Since 2018, she has been teaching contemporary vocal music and performance at the Karlsruhe University of Music, complementing her diverse artistic work.
Johanna Vargas studied in Bogotá, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. Her teachers include internationally renowned artists such as Hartmut Höll, Mitsuko Shirai, Angelika Luz and Georg Nigl.
