Severin Dornier: An[other] Alpine Symphony
Based on texts by Leta Semadeni and music by Richard Strauss
(2023/2024)Severin Dornier (*1993 in München) works in the fields of music theater, sound art and composition. He studied composition in Paris and Graz and now lives in Bern, where he completed his academic training at the Bern University of the Arts with Simon Steen Andersen.
Working at the intersection of music, installation art, and theatre, Severin’s artistic practice is based on two things: Firstly, a passion for the tangible and physical, expressed through the design and construction of innovative musical instruments and the constant search for new methods and materials to create sound. Secondly, the belief that art emerges within a specific context and the consequence that art-making always means recontextualization of the already existing. This subsequently leads him on forays through music history, often directly quoting and reusing past works of art.
In his current work, he is especially interested in the intersection of nature and technology and attempts to discover new connections between both through his music. This exploration occasionally extends to collaborations with organic life or machines, besides the many great opportunities he had to work together with fantastic musicians and other artists.
He is also a member of the performance collective Cocaine Hippos.
