(2014)Simon Steen-Andersen, born in Denmark in 1976, is a Berlin-based composer and works with a multidisciplinary approach to musical performance and concert situations, which is reflected in his works at the interface between the categories of music, performance, installation, theatre, choreography and film.
Simon Steen-Andersen has been honoured with numerous prizes and scholarships, most recently the SWR Symphony Orchestra Prize at the Donaueschingen Music Festival 2019, the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2017, the Nordic Council Music Prize and the Danish Carl Nielsen Prize. He has received commissions from ensembles, orchestras and festivals such as ensemble recherche, Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Ensemble Ascolta, JACK Quartet, Ensemble Modern, Oslo Sinfonietta, Ensemble 2e2m, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Ultraschall, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik and ECLAT.
Simon Steen-Andersen studied composition with Karl Aage Rasmussen, Mathias Spahlinger, Gabriel Valverde and Bent Sørensen in Aarhus, Freiburg, Buenos Aires and Copenhagen. He has taught at the music academies in Aarhus and Oslo, at the Darmstadt Summer Course and at the Berlin University of the Arts. He has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts since 2016 and Professor of Composition at Bern University of the Arts since 2018.
