Raed Yassin: A Short Biography of a Snake
for six voices and electronics
(2021)The recitation of Quranic verses often has a hypnotic yet penetrating sound. The preacher employs the full range of their intonation and articulation to showcase their skill and reach new heights of devotion and sublimity in their voice.
Many years ago, I discovered a very rare vinyl recording from the 1970s at a flea market in Aleppo, Syria, featuring a female preacher reciting the Quran in a distinctive manner. Over the years, as I listened to the recording repeatedly, I was so inspired by the emotion and agility of her voice that I decided to compose a musical piece based on this particular recitation. In this work, it is transformed into a vocal ensemble for six non-Arabic-speaking singers.
The piece is dedicated to Sheikha Fatima Mhanna (the reciter) and imagines her angelic presence hovering over the ruins of what was once a great city—Aleppo—now filled with ghosts and shadows.
